Welcome to GROOVI! This is a drum spinner 3lb robot, we finished it at 2am the night before Motorama :)
We manufactured our second edition Groovii over the course of the two weeks around spring break (but hey, at least this time we finished at 11 pm the night before our 2nd competition!)

Competitions

Motorama 2019

  • Results: 0/2
    • Bracket Style: Double Elimination
      • Loss vs tHe liD
        • (No. 1 Nemesis)
        • (we don't talk about this match...we just got swallowed))
      • Loss vs Deadly Princess
        • (No. 2 Nemesis)
        • (a beater bar, took a chunk out of our drum, one of our wheels was out for this match, Deadly Princess had a way better paint job :C))

RoboJackets 20th Anniversary Competition

  • Results: 2/4
    • Bracket Style: Round Robin - Four per Pool
      • [htpp:putwhenwegetthelink.com]
        • (Qualifying Match 1)
        • (Win due to forfeit against nonexistent opponent)
        • (Qualifying Match 2)
        • (Loss to Furi due to weapon motor not spinning up, drive train fully functional, but Furi got one hit in before his drum detached)
        • (Qualifying Match 3)
        • (Win over Doori by running into them at ramming speed and generally being aggressively annoying)
        • (Playoffs Match 1)
        • (Loss to Hypnotik, got torn apart by high schoolers but hey at least we had a better paint job this time, weapon wouldn't spin up and they trapped us in a corner :C)

Problems

  • Groovi - Motorama Edition
    • Nonfunctional drive motor
    • Locktight issues/pin in the drive motor was too short
    • Was barely enough room for electronics
    • Some holes were too small
    • Belt was too loose
  • Groovii - RoboJackets 20th Anniversary Edition
    • Belt was too tight, caused too much torque on the weapon motor and prevented its successful spinup
      • Except for that one time in front of the judges after we heat-gunned it
        • And promptly decided not to heat-gun it again before our playoffs match (big mistake)
    • Similar locktight issues to Motorama involving the pinion gear inside the drive motors
    • Wheel kept falling off because of a warped hub
    • Bearings were warped, which made it a lot harder for the drum to turn as smoothly
    • Overweight by 0.04 lb
      • Had to drill speed holes and eventually were forced to remove one of the middle steel teeth to avoid disqualification
    • Paint job on armor went all over the arena, but at least the top and bottom survived!

Good Aspects

  • Groovi - Motorama Edition
    • Drum was very solid
    • Was underweight
    • Armor was effective
    • Used hella electrical tape to fix switch (was functional at Motorama)
  • Groovii - RoboJackets 20th Anniversary Edition
    • MYSTERY MACHINE MAKEOVER
      • ALL the complements
    • Slightly larger chassis meant we had more room for electronics
    • Drum still very solid
    • Drive train worked well in all of our matches
    • Armor did its job
      • RIP Paint Job 2019
    • ESCs worked perfectly

Changes/Improvements

  • Groovi - Motorama Edition
    • Recalculate belt size, order more backups
    • Make side plates longer to accommodate electronics
    • Fix top and bottom plate to accommodate new side plates
    • Make a proper cutout for switch
    • New drive motor
    • Fix holes in motor mount, side plates, (front plate if possible?)
    • Push pin in drive motors further
  • Groovii - RoboJackets 20th Anniversary Edition
    • Recalculate belt size, order more backups
    • Reduce weight without taking out the tooth by cutting out holes in the top/bottom plates
    • Better drive motors
    • Replace bearings
    • No need for skid screws
