Esci is a beetle weight class robot that features a wedge and a vertical spinner.

Competitions

Motorama 2018

  • Results: 0-2
    • Bracket Style: 2 loss elimination
      • Drum Spinner
        • Almost won round, opponent was immobile
        • Gyroscopic effect flipped Esci
        • Need more practice driving
      • Drum Spinner
        • Weapon got stuck, Esci was vulnerable
        • Chassis got ripped to shreds and battery was exposed
        • Forfeited

Robogames 2018

  • Results: 1-2
    • Bracket Style: 2 loss elimination

Opponent 1 forfeited

Wedge with flamethrower:

  • Weapon failed to spin up.
  • Escii got pinned to the wall. Opponent wanted to test his fire on our HDPE. forfeit since loss was inevitable and the fire could cause issues. (can't break a spinner with the body if there is no spinner to break).
  • loss

Chewii:

  • One good hit, weapon assembly broke apart.
  • wheel stayed in tact after Chewii got a good hit on it.
  • The wheel that wasn't hit loosened and flew off. We need a better wheel to hold the foam since this happens to a lot of RJBB's 3 pounders.
  • loss

Problems

  • Gyroscopic effect/weapon placement (weapon was too far forward for wheels to counter, bot was too thin to resist gyroscopic lift)
  • Weapon mount caved in
  • Strength of chassis
  • Major issue: Ramp is too steep (23 degrees)

Good aspects

  • Weapon power
  • Zippy drive
  • Looks snazzy

Changes/Improvements

  • Wheel/Weapon location
  • Rounder chassis to avoid stress points
  • Wedge should be a lower angle and should not span the entire robot's width. (two prongs beside the weapon work better)

Escii

Key Design Updates

We departed from the aluminum frame that is commonly done and chose to make a sturdy endoskeleton with plastic armor appended to. Electronics are encased mostly by plastic in this case.

Escii is also invertible. Please make your bot invertible too. Learn from our first iteration's mistake.

Electronics are all the same. Gear Box is one that RJBB used a few years before Esci.

Flaws

  • Escii's weapon destroyed itself when it experienced a heavier force than what we tested with. The forces on each weapon wheel were unequal and therefore, the aluminum hub snapped into two pieces. Takeaways: Either use a solid weapon or use a very sturdy or replaceable assembly for your weapon.
  • The wheel hubs suck. This is an issue on many of RJBB's 3 lbers.
  • Screws holding in the weapon motor are imperfect in size and cause the motor to be somewhat loose. this causes a tilt that, if paired with a bad weapon assembly, will cause the band to slip off. Luckily, Esci's weapon (same as Escii) was made to have the belt in a location that prevents this. It is important to consider this issue for future weapon designs though.
  • Taco rarely but sometimes causes the weapon motor to be unable to spin. wires are pressed against it in these uncommon cases. (major cause of the loss to the firebot)
  • When the weapon is off, the drive's power isn't quite good enough to get by against non spinners.

Good Aspects

  • The endoskeleton and HPDE armor worked perfectly. It is encouraged by Team Esci that teams use this concept and build off of it to see what we can do with it.
  • Invertible
  • The wedges are functional as barriers.
  • HDPE and chassis can withstand fire.
  • HDPE and chassis can withstand Chewii.
  • HDPE and chassis can withstand Thomas with a hammer.
  • When transmitters and wheels work, the maneuverability is very good. Unfortunately, an incident happened with the transmitter we tested on before Escii began any matches at RoboGames and the sensitivity was never fixed on the new transmitter.
