This robot was built for and competed in the 2lb competition during the 2020-2021 season during the coronavirus pandemic. It features a ring that spins at an angle.

Competitions

2lb Competition 2021

  • Results:
    • Single Elimination:
      • [L vs Guillotini]
        • TPU idler wheels came off bearings, making weapon unusable. Lost a wheel during the match. Grip tape on wheel wrapped around axle, and melted, causing internal stress

Version

Wonki V1.0

Created by: Scott Janssen, Josh DesLaurier, Zach Slaton, Jackson Isenberg, Charlotte Wehner

Drive Motors 22mm DC gearmotor
Drive Motor Controllers Scorpion Mini Electronic Speed Control
Weapon Motor PROPDRIVE v2 2836 3000KV Brushless Outrunner Motor
Weapon Motor Controllers AeroStar WiFi 60A Brushless ESC with 5A BEC (2~6S)
Receiver Hobby King 2.4Ghz Receiver 6Ch V2
Remote Control Hobby King 2.4Ghz 6Ch Tx and Rx V2
Battery Turnigy Nano-Tech 1000mAh 3s 45~90c LiPo Pack

Problems

  • In original design, Drive wheels did not fit into chassis, forcing a reprint out of PLA
  • Design intended for 3 idler + 1 active wheel on the ring, but weight savings forced a removal of one of the idle wheels, making the ring unstable
  • The TPU rings expand under spin, causing them to slip off the bearings and come loose. They also melt and become unable to spin.
  • The standoffs were not threaded so a melt fit was required
  • The battery sticks out the top

Good aspects

  • The tilted ring turned out well
  • When working, the weapon had a lot of power compared to the other robots
  • Drove well, allowed for good seeding in tournament (won time trial)
  • It looked sick

Changes/Improvements

  • Use threaded standoffs and larger bolts to hold the robot together with threads instead of melted plastic
  • Design enough space for real wheels instead of 3d printed ones
  • Use a different material for the idle wheels that does not expand and melt so the ring will last longer

Notes:

Fun facts:

  • After initial assembly, the robot was .75 pounds overweight
  • The entire robot was reprinted in 10% infill the day before the competition
  • A hacksaw was used to cut enough space for the battery to sit on top

Naming inspiration:

  • The robot is named after its iconic “wonky” ring.
