Weight Class BeetleWeight
Weapon Class Horizontal Bar Spinner
Combined Wins/Losses 3/4
Weapon Speed Fast Enough Where Lift Became an Issue

Horizontal Bar Spinner with an initial focus on having modular parts that can be replaced as they get broken. Additionally, having armor that would be able to deflect glancing blows was prioritized in the design. The bar was designed to have a high moment of inertia.

Competitions

Motorama 2018

Results: 1 Win and 2 Losses

  • Bracket Style: Double Elimination
    • [Win vs Nitro Hornet]
      • Drive trouble prevented active attacking
      • Armor proved effective against lighter blows
      • After weapon collision, both bots had non-functional weapon systems
      • Our invertability allowed us to win against the immobile enemy
    • [Loss vs Squishy]
      • Severe drive problems
      • Due to lower amp weapon esc, there were several electrical problems
      • Several electrical shorts occurred as well
    • [Loss vs Some Dumb Pushbot]
      • Total electrical failure
      • Unable to move

RoboGames 2018

Results: 2 Wins and 2 Losses

  • Bracket Style: Double Elimination
    • [Loss vs Captain Doom]
      • Weapon ESC issues prevented quick spin up
      • Armor was too wide and caused Chewii to get caught on the side of the field
    • [Win vs Rum Ham]
      • Armor was cut beforehand and made more narrow
      • Better driving allowed Chewii to spin up in time
      • Rum Ham designed such that it couldn't get back up
      • Chewii's driver was an idiot and almost flipped Rum Ham right
    • [Win vs Escii]
      • Escii's weapon design caused it to break when it made contact
      • Unable to spin afterwards
    • [Loss vs Murder Pig]
      • Total weapon ESC failure prevented spin up
      • Armor was not secure enough and popped off
      • Chewii managed to get in a hit that disabled their weapon but lost on agression

Steel Weapon
Plastic armor

Problems

  • Electrical system was the thing that eventually killed us
  • The esc we planned on using was too big to use once we assembled it
  • The replacement esc we used wasn't rated to handle the current that our motor drew
  • Lack of heat shrink and having to rely on electrical tape caused shorts
  • Difficult to assemble
  • Lack of space inside for wires

Good aspects

  • Sturdy structure, took solid strikes and wasn't torn apart
  • Armor was really good at deflecting and taking minor blows
  • Hard hitting weapon
  • Invertablity

Changes/Improvements

  • Possible weight reduction on stucture
  • Focus more on electrical systems

Chewii V2.0

Problems

  • Catastrophic font failure.
  • Plastic armor was too wide initially and got caught
  • Weight miscalculations required a lot of speed holes
  • Plagued with electrical problems due to old components
  • Armor wasn't secured in enough places

Good aspects

  • New aluminum side walls made Chewii less prone to flexing
  • Narrower profile made it a smaller target
  • Invertible
  • Armor stood up to multiple hits

Changes/Improvements

  • Even more focus on electrical systems
  • For a team of ECE majors we really aren't great at electrical
  • Make armor into one piece secured around the chasis

Notes:

I personally believe it should be named Commi but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At one point it looked like the Millennium Falcon. 30 after seconds finalizing the name the design was radically changed and it no longer looked anything like the Millennium Falcon.
